Which devices are supported?
iPhone Pro and Pro Max models with a LiDAR scanner, from iPhone 12 Pro onward, running iOS 26 or later. Measuring is not possible on iPhones without LiDAR; the Photo mode still works.
How do I take a measurable photo?
In MEASURE mode, aim at the scene. When the reliability score at the top is high and no warning is shown, press the shutter. The photo is saved with its depth: you can measure it now or later.
Measuring
How do I measure on a saved photo?
Open the gallery (thumbnail at the bottom left), open a capture, then tap the photo. Choose Distance or Surface, then touch and drag to place each point with the magnifier. Long-press a measurement to delete it.
How do I measure live?
Aim the center reticle at the first point and tap +, then aim at the second point and tap + again. For a surface, switch the tool next to “+” and place each corner; aim back at the first corner or tap Done to close it. Live measurements are saved with the next photo.
How do I measure an opening, like an open door?
Measure it live, aiming at each side of the frame. On a photo, a measurement across empty space can be distorted by whatever is visible behind the opening.
How accurate are the measurements?
Typically within 1 to 2 cm up to about 5 m on matte, well-lit surfaces. Every measurement shows its uncertainty. Accuracy drops on glass, mirrors, very dark or shiny surfaces, and beyond 5 to 6 m. Measurements are indicative: where precision is critical, confirm with a dedicated instrument.
The app says “unstable measurement: glass, mirror…”
The depth sensor sees through glass and is fooled by reflections. Aim at a matte part of the frame or wall instead, or step slightly to the side.
Photos, notes and sharing
Where are my photos?
In the app's own gallery, grouped by day and by place — not in the Photos app. They are also visible in the Files app under On My iPhone › LiDAR Photo › Captures.
How do I back up my captures?
Share the PDF report of a visit (the PDF button next to each place in the gallery), or copy the Captures folder from the Files app to iCloud Drive or a computer. Important: deleting the app deletes all of its captures.
How do I share a photo with its measurements?
Open the capture in the gallery, then Share › Annotated photo. You get a regular photo with the measurements drawn on it and a caption with the date, place, measurements and note — it opens anywhere.
How do I give a capture to an AI assistant?
Open the capture, then Share › Full LiDAR capture, and send it to the AI assistant you use. Besides the photo, the file contains the depth map, the camera calibration and orientation, the location, your measurements and your notes, described in a documented format, so the assistant can work with real dimensions. Once shared, the file is handled under that assistant's own privacy rules.
Note dictation doesn't work
Check in Settings › LiDAR Photo that the microphone and speech recognition are allowed. The first time you dictate, iOS may need a connection to download the speech model.
The street address of a place is missing
Addresses need a network connection and location access. Captures taken offline show coordinates instead; the address appears the next time you open the gallery with a connection.
